Why Parts Proliferation Is Making Aftermarket Sourcing More Complex

One vehicle name can hide many generations, engines and OE references. Aftermarket sourcing gets harder at the reference level, not the model-name level.

The number of parts a distributor needs to manage can grow faster than the number of vehicle names in its catalogue. The reason is simple: each vehicle family can contain multiple generations, engines, body configurations, markets and component references.

This is commonly described as parts proliferation. In practice, it means that a familiar vehicle name can represent a surprisingly large identification problem.

One vehicle name does not mean one parts list

Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-MAX, Isuzu NPR, Isuzu NKR and Toyota Hiace are recognizable vehicle entities. They are not single-reference product families.

A sourcing team may need to distinguish between different applications within the same model family. Two products with similar descriptions can have different OE references and different fitment requirements.

Complexity appears at the reference level

A buyer may initially think in terms of categories:

  • brakes;
  • suspension;
  • engine;
  • transmission;
  • electrical;
  • cooling;
  • body;
  • filters.

The sourcing team eventually has to work at a more precise level: individual references, applications and product specifications.

That is why a large RFQ is not merely a longer shopping list. It is a data-organization problem.

DEAUTO's Hilux records provide a concrete example

One DEAUTO customer requirement contains 115 Hilux-related line records covering 81 DA references. This does not represent 115 separate orders and should not be interpreted as a measure of global Hilux demand.

It does demonstrate the practical scale that can appear inside one commercial requirement focused on a single vehicle platform.

Why normalization matters

A normalized sourcing workflow can preserve a common structure across incoming requests. Instead of treating every customer description as a unique text string, the team can connect the request to vehicle, application, OE reference, category and product information.

This becomes especially valuable when the buyer requests multiple categories at the same time.

Complexity is not solved by adding more catalogue pages alone

A larger catalogue can provide more references, but more references do not automatically make identification easier. Buyers still need to know which reference belongs to which application and whether the requested item is actually available through the chosen sourcing route.

The objective is therefore not maximum catalogue size. It is useful, traceable coverage.

What buyers should look for

When evaluating a sourcing partner, ask whether it can:

  1. identify the application behind a product request;
  2. work with OE references;
  3. handle multiple categories in one requirement;
  4. retain useful purchasing history;
  5. distinguish known references from unresolved ones.

Those capabilities address the underlying complexity of aftermarket sourcing rather than simply adding another product list.
